All the people of Ancona were filled with a proud excitement of joy. \u2026From the heights of San Ciriaco, from the top of the bell tower, from the summit of the dome, from all the prominent places, hundreds of citizens were on the lookout. The sea appeared entirely calm, a gentle green, on which moved, here and there scattered, broad violet patches, like shadows of fleeting clouds over a new meadow. Mount Conero, in its simple and grand outline, appeared barely pink with some inner glimmer of gold, as if a treasure hidden by a veil. The piers stretched out into the sea, which was less clear near the shore, like rigid, bright white arms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ships of the homeland sailed the Adriatic with joy; and the flagship waved atop the &#8216;Dandolo,&#8217; the marvelous vessel whose formidable towers sparkled in the sun. I will never forget in my life the thrill that ran through the crowd when the first cannon shot boomed. For several days, it was a spectacle, almost I would say, a festive one. Young and old, women and children, the poor and the rich alike flocked to the ships, climbed onto the decks, went below, admired every device in detail, listened attentively to the sailors&#8217; words, delighted in the enclosed air of the engines, touched the weapons. At sunset, people gathered on the piers to hear the salvo that greeted the lowering flags.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that the people, in a burst of tenderness, wanted to garland the renewed fleet with flowers.<\/p>\n<p>In Portonovo, in the tower by the sea, there is a guest of the De Basis family. It is <strong>Gabriele D\u2019Annunzio<\/strong>, a friend of the De Basis family, especially of Adolfo, a well-known writer who would die in 1924. He was a frequent guest in Ancona at Adolfo De Basis\u2019s magnificent tower in Portonovo. In Ancona, D\u2019Annunzio had witnessed in 1887 the parade of the young and powerful Italian naval squadron, reborn after the unfortunate Battle of Lissa. He himself talks about it in a colorful passage mentioned above. Struck by this majestic parade, D\u2019Annunzio, the author of many works glorifying the homeland, Italy, inspired by this powerful and, I would say, overwhelming sight, wrote the ode &#8220;To a Torpedo Boat in the Adriatic.&#8221; Historically, this torpedo boat was marked with the number 35 and was stationed in the Port of Ancona.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Annunzio was connected to the Marche region, where, in Porto San Giorgio, in 1883, he had spent his honeymoon; in 1918, during the flight over Vienna, his flying companion was a man from Fermo, Lieutenant Censi. Adolfo De Carolis from Montefiore dell\u2019Aso illustrated his works with stunning woodcuts (we recall *The Daughter of Iorio*, *Nightpiece*, *The Flame*). In the Fiume enterprise, many Marche natives shared with him the audacity of the capture and occupation.
