Le Marche, Italy. There are some beautiful artistic cities here and yet it is still rural at heart—farming, fishing, and light manufacturing help keep the economy going. But don’t think this region is a backwater. It gave us Bramante and Raphael, as well as the writer Leopardi and the composer Rossini. Every city and many of the smaller towns have ornate opera theaters that offer a variety of shows, and the region is rich in festivals and events.
