In the landscape of Italian dialectology, the Macerata area is still among the least explored: few specific studies, many documents to be discovered, and countless literary works, especially poems and comedies, waiting to be known and valued. For this reason, we have promoted a project that, combining scientific rigor with love for the territory in which we live, aims to finally bring the dialect to full recognition as a cultural asset. The scientific research activity on documents, both written and oral, is carried out by the Department of Linguistic, Philological, and Literary Research at the University of Macerata, which has already created the electronic catalog (continuously updated) of all the collected documentation, accessible on the website dedicated to the project. The project will be implemented gradually: the first module, launched in 2002 with the support of the local mountain community, concerns the area of the “Monti Azzurri” and will be completed in 2003. The second module will be carried out, also in 2003, in collaboration with the Mountain Community of San Severino Marche. Scientific research is accompanied by events, such as the one dedicated to the poet from Ginesina, Alfonso Leopardi, and other promotional initiatives, to make the general public aware of the expressive potential of our dialects and the human and artistic qualities of the authors who chose them to ‘tell us’ something about their (and our) world.
