Frichi, Burdei, Fandelli & Co. — A semi-serious guide to Marche kids
Some call them Frichi, some see them as Burdei, some say Munelli, Fandelli, Fiòli, Fiulin…
But one thing is certain: no one can really contain them.
In every Marche village there’s a colorful, affectionate name for children.
Words that seem to come straight from a punk song or a whispered oral story passed down through generations.
And often, more than sweet, they sound like they… sizzle.
Who are the Frichi really?
The Frichi are Marche childhood in full motion: running, jumping, shouting, rolling, singing, laughing, and crying all in the same minute.
The word, mainly used in the Macerata and Fermo areas, seems to derive from the Latin frictus — to sizzle, to rub, to fry — and, let’s be honest, anyone who has ever tried to dress one for school knows how they rub against calmness.
In the Pesaro area we find the Burdei or Fiulin, in Ancona the Fiòli, in Macerata, Fermo, and Ascoli Piceno the Fandelli or the Frichi, while in the inland areas you still hear Munelli.
Each name tells a local nuance: some sound sweeter, some harder, some mimic the quick pace of those who never want to stand still.
Casciara? Check!
The title of our t-shirt “Lost in Casciara” is a little manifesto of this boundless childhood energy.
Casciara = mess, chaos, noise.
A common expression in many areas of the Marche to indicate that continuous noise only a group of children can generate.
But also an atmosphere of joy, life, and play.
It’s where the frichi get lost — and maybe a little bit we do too — in a world where everything is lighter, off-key, creative.
A world where the only rule is… never stop.
