Ciargianese – dialect, confusion and invisible borders
“Are you speaking Ciargianese?”
A phrase that sounds like a joke, but hides a small story about language and identity.
In the Marche region, dialect changes every few kilometres: just move a little and you will find different words, accents and sounds. That is how Ciargianese becomes the ironic name for everything we do not immediately recognize: a language that feels close but foreign, familiar but different.
This postcard comes from WhatYouSay by MarcheLove, the research project on the language of territories: not the classic postcard landscape, but a landscape of words, made of differences, encounters and invisible borders.
Ciargianese tells the moment when not understanding each other becomes almost a way of recognizing ourselves: because in the Marche region, being a “stranger” can simply mean coming from the village next door.
A fragment of linguistic identity that speaks about dialects, belonging, irony and the hidden richness of our differences.
