Fiecca
The Word – “Fiecca” is not just a wooden wedge — it is a symbol of how people in the Marche region straighten life out. Sometimes all it takes is a small adjustment to restore balance, even when everything seems shaky. Mettece na fiecca (“put a wedge under it”) is one of the most practical, ingenious, and down-to-earth expressions of the Marche dialect, especially in the areas of Macerata and Fermo.
A fiecca was — and still is — a small wooden wedge, often triangular, used to fix anything that wobbles: a table, a chair, a piece of furniture, a worn-out support.
A quick gesture, a master’s trick, a philosophy of life: don’t preach, fix it.
The Landscape – In the Marche region, long discussions are rarely necessary: when something isn’t working, mettece na fiecca. The philosophy of the fiecca applies to unstable tables and crooked chairs, but also to conversations, relationships, and everyday problems. Pragmatism, ingenuity, and irony condensed into a simple gesture.
The Translation / Motto – Patch it, don’t preach it.
The Visual Interpretation – The design reflects this philosophy: clean, assertive lettering with angular details and subtle lines that recall the movement of a wedge. A blend of irony and Marche minimalism. The composition celebrates the everyday gesture that saves the situation, transforming the humble fiecca into an icon of pragmatism and style. Part of the WhatYouSay research project exploring the language of place.
The Philosophy of Saying and Doing – A fiecca doesn’t preach — it acts. Quiet but powerful, humble yet essential. In other words: find the right fix, put it in place, and move forward. A simple gesture carrying centuries of rural culture, resilience, and Marche creativity.
